Christmas at Connie's Condo

President Connie Knain hosted Beta Chapter members for a Christmas get together.

The ladies enjoyed visiting, singing carols for condo residents, and playing cards and games.

Members brought items for the YWCA Women's Shelter (an on-going chapter project) Holiday Gift Boutique. Of course, a party is not complete without food: punch, tiny spinach quiches, rye bread sandwichs, cheesecake and cookies.

The white elephant gift exchange

brought surprises...

and laughter...

...and pleased smiles...
...especially Connie's gift of a Fly By Night Club T-shirt.

Party goers left saying, "Let's do this next year."

Beta Kudos

Collette Folstad was featured in Bison Illustrated, April, 2010 issue. The article describes her passion for women's athletics and her founding of women's volleyball and basketball at NDSU. She's had many honors for coaching at the high school and college levels. In 1990 she was inducted into the NDSU Athletic Hall of Fame. She continues her interest in the Bison women's team by volunteering as game scorekeeper.

Ginger Deitz was one of two NDSU Distance and Continuing
Education instructors who were presented with awards at the
National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Baltimore,
June 24-26. The award winners are instructors of the widely
recognized Food, Land and People workshop series for PreK-12
educators throughout North Dakota.
Deitz, who is a fourth grade teacher at Bennett Elementary in
Fargo, earned the national Teacher of Excellence Award for her
commitment to educating her students about agriculture. She is
one of only five educators nationwide to receive the honor.
The Food, Land and People series is offered through a partnership
between NDSU’s Department of Distance and Continuing
Education and North Dakota Department of Agriculture, home
of the state program of Agriculture in the Classroom.

I'm honored...

At the June Alpha Omicron State Workshop, a larger than usual group of past state presidents was in attendance. Our sisters clamored for a photo op.

In the front row from the left are Ann Haugaard, Adelaide Johnson and Faye Miller. The back row shows Connie Knain (Beta), Dotti Dixon-Schmeling, Joanne Beckman, Verna LaBounty (Beta), and Esther Eustice.

How many years of membership are represented by this group of women? Just start with Ann, who's been a member for 50+ years and keep adding.

Connie and I are honored to be part of this state leadership group.

I attend chapter meetings because...

I like to see my friends.
We smile and chat warmed by friendship and food.
I like the places we go, Children's Museum, YWCA shelter, Charism, Fargo Theater, to name just a few. The pre-70th birthday party at the Silver Moon introduced me to a new night club, one with history and charm.
I always learn at least one new thing from our programs. Remember the one about Jewish customs and culture or the one about the children's ward at MeritCare or volunteering at the women's shelter.

Why do you go to a meeting? I invite you to share your reasons for making Beta Chapter meetings a priority.

Beta Chapter Needs You

Thursday, August 12, 7 p.m.
Dessert Get-Together
Connie's Condo - 5855 24th St. S #303
Your ideas are needed for programs, venues, and Beta's 70th Birthday Party.

Beta's President, Connie Knain, would like to see increased meeting attendance. Lots of effort goes into obtaining speakers who present challenging ideas and into choosing meeting sites that take us to new places. Come and share your vision for Beta Chapter. RSVP to Connie.

A Delta Kappa Gamma Story

Each member of Beta Chapter has a story about their membership invitation to the Society.

Mine came in a letter asking women educators to a meeting to explore the establishment of a new chapter. Pi Chapter, covering four counties, was born from this meeting. I signed the charter and became the first president. As I moved from one teaching position to another, I transferred from Pi to Lambda to Beta. Encouraged by my Society sisters, I applied for and won a scholarship to help finance my graduate degree. In the Society I learned about leadership and served as an officer and committee member at the Chapter and State level. My term as state president took me to leadership training with the other leaders in the Northwest Region. I served on the International Professional Affairs Committee.

More important than these opportunities, I gained personal friendships with women who recognize and support the talents and endeavors of other women.

Tell your story by adding a comment.

Welcome to Beta Chapter

Chartered on January 30, 1941, Beta Chapter enrolled 15 key women educators as charter members. The chapter is part of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International that promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education throughout the world.

Currently, forty-five women from all levels of education (kindergarten through college) make up the membership of Beta Chapter. President Ann Braaten teaches at NDSU; Linda Fricker and Jo Cavins, first and second vice-presidents, respectively, NDSU; Debbie Boyer, secretary, West Fargo Public School; and Collette Folstad, Treasurer, retiree from West Fargo Middle School.

Beta Chapter provides leadership and service opportunities. Several members hold office or committee assignments in Alpha Omicron State and several have had committee appointments at the International. The chapter offers a scholarship to attain an advanced degree, a music camp scholarship for junior high students, and a recruitment grant to a high school graduate choosing to major in education.

Service to women and children takes a high priority in chapter projects. For many years, Beta Chapter has donated items and volunteered time at the YWCA Women's Shelter. The chapter supports the Expanding Your Horizons program for girls and the Tri-College New Leadership Conference through monetary gifts, time, and promotion.

In February, members met at Zandbroz Variety for a late afternoon meeting and then attended A Celebration of Women and Their Music at the Fargo Theater. The March meeting featured Sharon Miller, NDSU, speaking on Finding Your Passion in Today's Job Market. An April meeting is planned for the Comstock House in Moorhead and in May members will tour the Charism Center.
